We live in a strange and perilous time. What used to be accepted as fact, now sits uncomfortably at the party next to fiction. Truth looks more like an ideological construct, whose subversion threatens to unseat centuries old democracies. In this moment of both real and imagined existential threat, we are separated from our fellow humans by algorithms, drawn into and cloaked by our own irrefutable narratives in order to protect ourselves from the possibility of extinction.
The camera was once a tool whose output could be relied on as evidence, though art historians remind us that photography has always had a shifty relationship with truth. AI has pushed this concept over the threshold. The image has been forever liberated from the medium. What remains are mere Traces of Truth.

Barry Sutton is a photographer and multidisciplinary artist with over 30 years behind the lens. His 2021 collection, 96° in the Shade, is a seminal work in the NFT space generating over 100ETH in sales, leading to a string of follow-on projects selling over 600 1/1 photography NFTs. This is his first exhibition of images created using AI.
Traces of Truth comprises 500 portraits of twins, each adorned with cameras born of dystopian utility, as a universal metaphor for the tension between resemblance and recognition- asking questions about the camera’s influence on our culture, self-awareness, our subservience to its power, the nature of photography and our relationship to truth.
